Ian Cunningham a St. Patrick’s Branch member in Wales who was privileged to have attended this match writes…….
I was there as a 9 year old – and to record Reilly’s goal as – ” ………….and Reilly headed home Smith’s cross” is just about the greatest injustice I can think of. Lawrie was about FOUR feet off the ground when he HORIZONTALLY met the ball perfectly – and the ball flew into the roof of the net – playing down the hill. It was a fabulous header ( I can still see it in my mind’s eye – even after 60 years ) !!
