Well I got home from the 1950’s pretty quickly tonight after an efficient Hibernian victory against Cowdenbeath. Pre match I joined my fellow St. Patrick’s Branch members and our pals from Groningen for a glass of juice in the excellent and very welcoming Cowdenbeath fans bar, the Junction. Nice to see the lads n lassies again who seemed to be enjoying the free stovies and sannies. I also had a good blether with Amit, the new fans representative on the Board who had joined the St Pats lads for the trip over. I like the cut of his gib.
After my and the laddies had savoured an excellent Stephen’s Steak Bridie we headed into the stadium in the land that time forgot. The pitch is a disgrace, the ball bobbles constantly and the ‘beath stick to hoofball. I do admire the wee clubs with their 400 fans and I am happy to give them my cash, Donald Findlay and all but by Sauzee, what a tip. Their homemade Lentil soup is smashing though, I dream of simple catering like that at Easter Road.
Onto the team….today saw Paul Hanlon rested, Dom Malonga dropped out of the squad completely and I understand Cerny is ill.
Oxley – Really had one save to make, a punched clearance, which he coped with well.
Gray – David, David Gray was back in the team., which is nice to see. The narrow pitch didn’t allow him of Lewis much opportunity to push forward though.
Watson – As he gets comfortable, Keith looks a very good player, and had an excellent game today.
Fontaine – Liam simply has at least a good game every week, he did so again today.
Stevenson – Had his usual decent performance, like Gray it was not a pitch that suits Lewis swashbuckling runs.
Fyvie – I will start with Fraser today, not only because I felt he was Hibs best performing midfielder, indeed his sweetly stuck opener was very well worked and for me he was Hibs best player today. I like this laddie. I understand Fraser became Hibs 22nd goal scorer of the season?
McGeogh – The tattie field didnae allow for the fluid, controlled ball play Dylan offers, however I thought he was decent first half, less effective second?
Robertson – Not the hardest game Scott will have this season, but he done everything asked of him, he is quietly efficient in his play.
Allan – Blew hot and cold today, couple of very good passes, some decent runs but still looks like there is something up? Subbed for Forster with 5 to go.
Dja Djedje – I watched him and Cummings closely today after a fellow Bouncer suggested both are lazy? I didn’t think he was lazy, just not very good today. His flop of a pass to Allan to kill the game off last ten, saw Scott kick the ball away in frustration and get booked. Wasn’t impressed with him today.
Cummings – Been avoiding this, as Southfield tapped me on the shoulder after Jason’s goal to say he was looking forward to my description of the freaky build up. Here goes, Hibs were pressing just inside the Cowdenbeath box, they seemed to get it clear when their 26 seemed to think it was clear to roll his back to his keeper, not seeing Jason Cummings (neither did I), who nipped in and tapped it past the goalie. Weird goal that Southfield will obviously better explain when he reads the thread. Otherwise, Jason didn’t offer too much, again I didn’t see laziness, and he was hooked at half time for Boyle.
Boyle – On for Cummings at half time. You can see Boyle has some ability, but him and Djedje played too far apart and were ineffectual. Boyle is too easily pushed off the ball and for me, we can find better in the close season.
Stanton – On for Djedje for a few minutes at the end. I would have brought Sammy on earlier, he can change a game, he cannae do that on the bench.
Forster – Came on for a minute or two to replace Allan, nice to see the big guy on the pitch.
Overall, we bossed the first half after the traditional Hibs wobbly first 5-10 minutes, and we simply killed the game second. Not good on the eye second half, but it has taken us seven points ahead of the Huns (thank you Livingston) and on that playing surface, a 2-0 win is perfectly acceptable.
Stubbs and the lads – I was happy enough with the win, I felt he might of injected some fitba into the second half, he never but I will take a 2-0 win any day, a clean sheet, Jason getting his 15th of the season and Fraser breaking his duck. I also note he did not bring on Craig, clearly agreeing with my summary of the Livingston game.
Cowdenbeath – Not as good as Livingston, other than the very decent No 6 who may step up a League if he plays like that every week. The stadium is a hole, but at least it stayed dry and as I said, the lentil soup was braw on a cold day.
Fans – There was around 1400 Hibs fans in the 1800 crowd. Frankly I am disappointed more Hibs fans dinnae come along, given that in a few weeks we will have everyone and their dug looking for tickets for the Cup Semi Final. A wee note, one of the Hibs fans on the terrace was Leeanne Dempster, fair play.
Man of the Match – For me it was easy, Fraser Fyvie, he gave his all for 90 minutes, is tough, skillful and scored a decent goal after excellent build up play.
Next, bring on the Cream Buns.
