arbroath

Well that was a decent game; I was very impressed with Arbroath and with Alan Stubbs substitution that finally won us the game. We have played better and lost, but we had enough about us today to get us into the next round.

So to the players…

Oxley – Had to make a couple of saves, although I was not impressed with is lack of effort at Arbroath’s very well worked and cleverly executed goal. He and his defenders all should have done better.

Gray – Great to see him back and he strolled through the game today, he is a fine player. Great ball for DjeDje’s goal.

Fontaine – Another Hibs player who has become a first pick, a good, ball playing defender who can get tore in, Big Liam needs to have that contract of his extended.

Hanlon – I thought Paul was distinctly average today, too many wee mistakes, and struggled against their very decent number 9 and 10.

Stevenson – I was delighted to see Lewis wear the captain’s armband in his 250th game for the Hibs, more so because it meant Craig wasn’t wearing it. Lewis was excellent today, up and down the left all match long and a couple of half chances came his way too. Dare I say it, Lewis on form reminds me of Erich Schaedler.

Craig – I will get it out the way early this week, he was useless, the only time you knew he was playing is when he made an erse of something. The best parts of his game today were the fact he wisnae captain, and his substitution for Dylan McGeogh changed the game in our favour.

Robertson – Made a couple of daft mistakes today, but he plays that holding role so well and I thought overall had a fine game.

Fyvie – A big ask to bring in a new signing and ask him to play 90 minutes. Fraser struggled until the clever swap with Craig and McGeogh, he then really kicked on and looked to get more and more into the game. A good signing once fit and playing regularly I think?

Allan – Scott is a joy to watch. His slotted pass to gray to set up our first goal is the reason we need to offer Scott a fat juicy contract. Build a team round him? I would try and clone him!

DjeDje – Frank became the 20th differing Hibs player to score this season (Fact courtesy of new board member and namesake Frank Dougan). After he scored he seemed to come into the game more, although he has a long way to go to keep Farid or Malonga out the team.

Cummings – He worked hard as ever and might have had a hat trick. His shot that came off the Arbroath defender for us to take the lead was going out for a throw. Too often he tried to chip/ pass/ flick it in when putting his laces through may have been a better option, but then a few weeks ago we were asking him to take more time in shooting. I like it better when you blooter it son.

Subs

The game changer was the removal of the hapless Craig for the wonderful Dylan McGeogh, to have Scott Allan and Dylan McGeogh in Hibs shirts is fantastic. Dylan changed the game for us, his direct play, ability to beat a man and fine shot from outside the box won us the game. I hope we plan to sign this laddie on a long contract, what a smashing football player.

Stanton for Allan – Scott came off for his normal standing ovation. I was happy to see Sammy come on and do well, he is better than Danny Handling for me.

The management team did well today, the Rid Lichties were a tough kipper to chew on and took a bit of breaking down. The change of Craig for McGeogh and the change of tactics to go with it worked and we went on to win comfortably.

The Ref – Just like his dad, Master Dallas thinks we come to football to watch the referee, we don’t.

Hibs Fans – Reasonably decent atmosphere created by the lads, in decent crowd of 9000 plus. Mention to the 1000 or so fans from Arbroath who came to back their team, fair play, although you are and will forever be maroon and white shite.

Arbroath – They look like a team at the top of their league, some very good players, especially both the 9 and 10, who deserved their ovation from the Hibs fans. Alan Moore definitely knows how to get the best from a team.

Bring on THE Rangers.
